There is a drive at the moment to add ICE to your mobile phone. Add the name Ice with details of your next of kin, phone number and address. If you happen to be involved in an accident or pass out people can look at your phone and contact the right person.

Michele Ferrari

You don't have to be a top pro rider to have a coach. You can also have the same coaches as the top riders.

Tip of the day (cycling club)

Manchester Wheelers outside the Manchester Velodrome

To get the most out of your cycling join a club. I have put a link below to the British Cycling Website which has a search facility to find cycling clubs all round the country. Clubs come in all shape and sizes so choose one that suits you. As well as cycling there is also a great social side to cycling clubs.

Tip of the day (warm up)

Always have a good warm up before an event. 15 to 20 mins just to get oxygen into your lungs and get the blood pumping round your veins. It will also help to stop you getting cramp. The older you are the more important it is to warm up properly.

Tuesday 25 January 2011

Tip of the day (sunday morning ride)

Check with your local bike shop to see if there any sunday morning clubs runs in the area. It's always easier to train in a group than by yourself. They usually two a hard one and an easy one, and tend to meet up at a cafe half way round.

Tip of the day (newspaper)

You've probbaly seen it when watching the Tour de France just before the riders start the descent down the mountains team helpers hand up sheets of newspaper to the riders. It's not for reading they put it under their jersey to protect themselves from the wind on the descent

Tip of the day (all you can eat buffet)

ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFETS

After an event look out for Chinese or Thai Restaurants offering an All You Can Eat Buffet. For a set price you can eat as much as your like. They usually have a huge choice of dishes and the great thing is you can eat as much as you like. Great for hungry cyclists or any sports teams.

I have to hold my hands up here and declare a self interest. My wife and I run a couple of Thai Restaurant's around Manchester.

Tip of the day (malt loaf)

Soreen malt loaf is a favourite with many cyclists. They even make some now which already have butter on them

Tip of the day (golden rule)

Not so much a tip as a golden rule of cycling is NEVER LEAVE A RIDER BEHIND. Because one day it could be you.

Saturday 22 January 2011

Tip of the day (french hotels)

If you are doing an event in France or just travelling through France and need to find a hotel. This is my favourite chain of hotels. Fast Hotel they have them all over the country. Convenient, clean, on suite bathroom, TV and very reasonable.

http://www.fasthotel.com/

Tip of the day (continental sportives)

If you fancy doing a continental sportive try Sports Tours International they have packages for all the major cyclosportive events. They take the hassle of trying to organise it yourself. Your free to enjoy the sportive.

Tip of the day (coke)

Before all these great sports drinks came along most cyclist used to use coke in their bottles. Make sure you de-fizz it first or after you go over the first bump your bottle will explode and you'll be covered in a wet sticky substance.
Your body absorbs water quicker with caffeine added. A lot of sports drinks companies are now adding caffeine to their products.

Tip of the day (muesli)

Muesli is a favourite with nearly all cyclists. Jan Ulrich the great German Tour de France rider used to virtually live on the stuff.

Tip of the day (bananas)

Bananas are a great source of energy which they release slowly. They also come coveniently packaged and are easy to slip into your back pocket.

Friday 21 January 2011

Tip of the day (natural yoghurt)

Feeling under the weather try natural yoghurt. It's the best way to build up your immune system. It has to be live natural yoghurt. You can eat with with fresh fruit or pour it over muesli.
